What are Chlamydia and Gonorrhea?
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) is one of the most common STIs in Japan. Many infected individuals are asymptomatic, leading to the condition often going unnoticed and untreated. There's a risk of unknowingly spreading the infection to partners.
Main Symptoms
- Discharge from the urethra/vagina
- Discomfort or pain during urination
- Lower abdominal pain, irregular bleeding (women)
- Often asymptomatic
What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by gonococci, characterized by relatively strong symptoms. In recent years, antibiotic-resistant strains of gonorrhea have become a concern.
Main Symptoms
- Severe pain and burning sensation during urination
- Purulent discharge from the urethra/vagina
- If untreated, can lead to epididymitis and infertility
What is Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes (Herpes simplex virus: HSV) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. Once infected, the virus remains latent in the body and tends to recur when immunity is lowered.
Main Symptoms
- Blisters and ulcers on genitals and around the anus
- Severe pain, itching, burning sensation
- Pain during urination
- Fever, fatigue (common during initial infection)
About Recurrence
After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant in the nerve ganglia. Recurrences can be triggered by fatigue, stress, or weakened immunity. Symptoms during recurrence are often milder than the initial infection, and antiviral drugs can quickly alleviate them.
What is Candidiasis?
Candidiasis (Candida albicans) occurs when fungi (yeast) that are naturally present in the body grow excessively. Although it is a sexually transmitted infection, it can also develop without sexual activity due to weakened immunity or antibiotic use.
Main Symptoms
In women
- White, cottage cheese-like discharge
- Severe itching and redness of the vulva and vagina
- Pain during urination or sexual intercourse
In men
- Itching and redness of the glans and foreskin
- White, film-like substance attached
- Often asymptomatic
What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. It is typically transmitted through sexual contact, but can also be spread through towels, bathtubs, and other shared items.
Main Symptoms
In women
- Yellow-green, frothy, foul-smelling discharge
- Itching and burning sensation in the vulva
- Pain during urination
In men
- Often asymptomatic
- Urethritis symptoms (discomfort during urination) may occur
What is Condyloma (Genital Warts)?
Condyloma is a sexually transmitted infection where wart-like lesions appear on the genitals and around the anus due to infection with HPV (Human Papillomavirus).
Main Symptoms
- Warts on the genitals and around the anus (papillary or cock's comb-like)
- Itching and discomfort
- Usually painless
About Treatment
Treatment primarily involves topical medication. In some cases, depending on the size, number, and location of the lesions, in-clinic procedures may be necessary.
What is Syphilis?
Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) is a sexually transmitted infection that has been rapidly increasing in Japan recently. After infection, symptoms appear and disappear in cycles as the disease progresses, and if left untreated, it can lead to serious effects throughout the body.
Stages of Syphilis Progression

We recommend testing for multiple STIs if:
