Order OnlineWhat is Shingles?
Shingles is a disease caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster virus), which lies dormant in the nerves after a childhood chickenpox infection. It reactivates when immunity is lowered due to fatigue, stress, or aging. It is said that approximately one in three Japanese people will experience it at least once in their lifetime.
Characteristic Signs
-
Appears only on one side of the body (does not cross the body's midline)
-
Rash and blisters arranged in a band-like pattern along the nerve pathway
-
Often preceded by tingling or stinging pain before the rash appears
-
Commonly occurs on the chest, back, abdomen, and face
If these two conditions are met — "only on one side" and "pain first" — strongly suspect shingles.
Progression of Symptoms
|
Period |
Symptoms |
|---|---|
|
Prodromal Phase (a few days to 1 week prior) |
Tingling, stinging pain, or discomfort on one side. No rash yet. |
|
Acute Phase (rash to 1 week) |
Redness → Blisters. Pain intensifies. |
|
Scab Phase (1 to 2 weeks) |
Blisters rupture and form scabs. |
|
Healing Phase (2 to 4 weeks) |
Scabs peel off. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may remain. |
The frightening "Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN)" if left untreated
Even after the rash heals, burning pain or pain from clothing touching the skin may persist for several months to several years. It is said that about 20% of people over 50 who develop shingles will transition to PHN. The best way to prevent this is early treatment during the acute phase.
Triggers
-
Aging (rapid increase after age 50, but cases in 20s-40s are also increasing in recent years)
-
Overwork, severe stress, lack of sleep
-
After infections like the common cold
-
Underlying conditions like diabetes, use of immunosuppressive drugs
-
Excessive dieting, malnutrition
It is typical for it to occur during periods when one has been "constantly busy recently" or "can't shake off fatigue."

During Consultation
During an online consultation, it helps to have photos of the affected area ready for a smoother diagnosis (please take photos in a well-lit area, showing the extent of the rash).
When to Seek In-Person Medical Attention Immediately, Not Online
If any of the following apply, there is a risk of serious complications, so please see an in-person medical institution (ophthalmologist, ENT, dermatologist, emergency room) on the same day.
-
Rash around the eyes or on the tip of the nose (Ophthalmic zoster → risk of vision impairment. See an ophthalmologist)
-
Rash inside or around the ear, difficulty moving the face, hearing impairment (Ramsay Hunt syndrome → See an ENT)
-
Rash is widespread or on both sides of the body
-
High fever, severe headache, confusion
-
Difficulty urinating or defecating
If an online consultation determines that an in-person visit is necessary, we will guide you to an appropriate medical institution.
After Recovery: Prevention | Shingles Vaccine
Shingles is a preventable disease with a vaccine. For people aged 50 and older, and for preventing recurrence in those who have had it once, vaccination with Shingrix or similar vaccines is recommended.
Mona Aoyama Clinic offers in-person vaccination.
