Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs about PrEP

How effective is PrEP?

According to the CDC, continued daily PrEP use reduces the risk of sexually acquired HIV by approximately 99%. On-demand PrEP, taken only for a few days before and after sexual activity, is also said to be as effective as daily PrEP, but daily PrEP is recommended for those who cannot predict when they will have sex.

How long does it take for the medication to take effect after starting it?

Anal sex takes about 7 days, or about 20 days if transmitted through blood or during vaginal intercourse.

Are there any side effects of PrEP?

You may experience nausea, but it is not serious and will usually go away over time.

Once I start taking this medicine, will I have have to take it for the rest of my life?

No. If your risk of infection decreases, you do not need to continue PrEP. However, if your partner or circumstances change, please consult with your doctor to consider the best course of action.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you notice the symptoms.

What should I do if I forget whether I've taken it?

If you occasionally forget a dose, please take it. Taking two tablets in one day generally won't cause any issues. However, if you repeatedly take two tablets, the burden on your kidneys will increase, so please consult a doctor.

Is hormone therapy safe while taking PrEP?

There are no issues, but please be sure to inform the clinic where you are receiving hormone treatment about your medication.

I heard that continuing to take the medication can lead to drug tolerance. Is that true?

Please be assured that HIV-negative individuals will not develop drug resistance. However, if PrEP is continued without realizing that one is HIV-positive, there is a possibility that a virus resistant to HIV treatment drugs may emerge, which could limit treatment options.

Is it possible to contract HIV even if I am taking PrEP?

This can happen if you were HIV-positive but didn't know it and were taking PrEP, especially if you were inconsistent with your PrEP regimen or stopped taking it suddenly.

What should I do if I want to stop PrEP?

Stop taking PrEP 7 days after your last risky act. If you have chronic hepatitis B, stopping PrEP will cause it to lose its therapeutic effect, and your hepatitis B may rapidly worsen. Consult a doctor before stopping.

Everything was very smooth, and the communication and responses were excellent. I didn't have to search online for inquiries; I just registered on LINE and could easily ask questions or send messages. Many other places have set phone service hours, but with Aoyama-san, I just had to send a message, and I would get a quick and proper response. This made things incredibly smooth and was a huge help! I also felt very reassured and helped when I was told to feel free to ask about medications.
Thank you very much!😻
