How long does it take for the medication to take effect after starting it?

Anal sex takes about 7 days, and cases of blood-borne transmission or vaginal intercourse take about 20 days.

Are there any side effects of PrEP?

While nausea and other symptoms may occur, they are not serious and usually disappear over time.

Once I start taking this medication, do I have to take it for the rest of my life?

What should I do if I forget to take a dose?

Is it possible to contract HIV even if I am taking PrEP?

This can occur if an individual who was unknowingly HIV-positive had been taking PrEP, but then took it inconsistently or suddenly stopped.

What should I do if I want to stop taking PrEP?

Stop taking PrEP 7 days after the last risky act. If you have chronic hepatitis B, stopping PrEP will cause it to lose its therapeutic effect and hepatitis B may rapidly worsen. Consult a doctor before stopping PrEP.
