Preventing gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia after sex

Syphilis has a reported preventative effect of 80-90%, chlamydia 80-90%, and gonorrhea approximately 50-60%.

Safety-established medications recommended by the U.S. CDC

Although not yet widely recognized in Japan, this preventive method was announced by the US CDC in 2023. Vibramycin, used in Doxy-PEP, is an antibacterial agent developed by Pfizer. It has a long history, and reports of side effects are rare. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as discomfort and nausea are the main reported side effects.

How to Take Doxy-PEP

Take a single 200 mg dose of Doxy-PEP medication as soon as possible, within 72 hours of condomless sex. Take it with a glass of water, and do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking it.

Are there any side effects?

Gastrointestinal symptoms, photosensitivity (individuals with fair skin or those living in sunny climates are advised to use sunscreen), allergic reactions/rashes, antibiotic resistance from short-term use, and very rarely, headaches or vision changes (changes in hearing or vision may not be side effects but rather symptoms of syphilis, so if you experience such symptoms, seek medical attention immediately) have been reported.

Does it also prevent HIV?

It does not prevent syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. For HIV prevention, use PEP/PrEP.

Is immediate pickup available?

This is possible if you choose our express prescription service. You will pick it up at our Aoyama clinic. Please inquire separately regarding pickup times.

There are no concerning data to suggest that the use of Doxy-PEP increases antimicrobial resistance in patients followed for approximately one year by researchers.
