What is PEP?

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a way to prevent HIV infection after potential exposure. Take one dose at the same time every day for 28 days. We recommend getting tested one, three, and six months after starting PEP. After 28 days, you can start PrEP for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis.

How effective is PEP?

If taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse and used correctly, it is said to have an effectiveness rate of over 99%.

Are there any side effects of PEP?

Headaches, nausea, and abdominal bloating may occur (around 2%). These symptoms are usually mild and disappear within about a month. However, if the side effects are severe or concerning, please consult a doctor. If you experience fever, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms (such as influenza-like illness), these might not be side effects but could indicate an HIV infection shortly after exposure, so please consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Are tests for HIV, hepatitis B, etc. included?
