FAQ for PrEP
Q. How effective is PrEP?
A. According to CDC reports, continuous use of daily PrEP reduces the risk of HIV infection from sexual activity by approximately 99%. On-demand PrEP, which is taken for a few days before and after sex, is said to show similar effectiveness to daily PrEP. However, daily PrEP is recommended for those who are unsure when they will engage in sexual activity.
Q. How long does it take for PrEP to become effective?
A. For anal sex, it takes about 7 days. For bloodborne transmission or vaginal sex, it takes about 20 days.
Q. Are there any side effects of PrEP?
A. Nausea and other mild side effects may occur, but they are not serious and typically subside with time.
Q. Do I have to take PrEP for the rest of my life once I start?
A. No, you do not need to continue PrEP indefinitely if your risk of infection decreases. However, if your partner or circumstances change, it is important to consult with a doctor to determine the best course of action.
Q. What should I do if I forget to take my PrEP?
A. Take the dose as soon as you remember.
Q. What should I do if I forget whether I took my dose or not?
A. If it's a rare occurrence, take the dose. It's fine to take two tablets in one day, but repeatedly taking two tablets can put extra strain on your kidneys, so it's best to consult with a doctor if this happens often.
Q. Is it safe to undergo hormone treatment while taking PrEP?
A. There are no issues with combining PrEP and hormone treatment. However, be sure to inform the clinic that is administering your hormone therapy about your PrEP use.
Q. I've heard that taking PrEP for a long time can lead to drug resistance. Is that okay?
A. Rest assured, individuals who are HIV-negative do not develop drug resistance. However, if you unknowingly have HIV while taking PrEP, there is a risk of developing drug-resistant HIV strains, which could limit future treatment options.
Q. Is it possible to get HIV while taking PrEP?
A. It is possible if you were already HIV-positive without knowing it, or if you become inconsistent with your PrEP regimen or suddenly stop taking it.
Q. What should I do if I want to stop taking PrEP?
A. If you want to stop taking PrEP, continue taking it for 7 days after your last risky sexual encounter. For men taking Truvada and transgender women who are not undergoing hormone therapy, you can stop after taking it for 2 days following the last risky encounter. Additionally, for individuals with chronic Hepatitis B, stopping PrEP may cause a loss of its therapeutic effects, which can lead to a sudden worsening of Hepatitis B. It is important to consult with your doctor before stopping.
